Stephen Hearns MB ChB FRCEM FRCS FRCP FRGS DIMC DRTM

Stephen is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and is the lead consultant for Scotland’s Emergency Medical Retrieval Service. This aeromedical retrieval service delivers pre-hospital critical care for major trauma patients, rural hospital secondary retrievals and major incident responses. Inspired by experience gained working on London’s air ambulance and in Queensland Australia, Stephen led the establishment of this team from a small voluntary service in 2004 to what is now a fully government funded aeromedical retrieval organisation with an international reputation.

Stephen has published a number of papers and book chapters relating to emergency medicine and pre-hospital care. He also led the team establishing the Diploma in retrieval and transfer medicine for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He developed and contributes to the organisation of the annual UK retrieval conference. Stephen is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University of Glasgow.

He has been an active voluntary member of Arrochar mountain rescue team for 20 years and holds the Mountain Leader Award. Stephen acted as medical officer on seven international expeditions in mountain, desert, jungle and arctic environments before establishing the first expedition medicine course in the UK.

John-Paul Loughrey MBChB FRCEM DipRTM(RCSEd)

JP is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Lanarkshire and has worked with EMRS in a variety of roles since November 2011. He is the Major Incident lead for the service and represents the West of Scotland on the RCEM National Board.  In addition, his other main professional interests are in major trauma care, and teaching and training (both undergraduate and postgraduate) and instructing on a variety of courses including APLS and ETC. When not in work, JP spends his time with his adventurous son and training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which he describes as “human chess, but a bit more dangerous”.

Omair Malik

Omair is a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. He is also a permanent member of the ScotSTAR Paediatric Intensive Care Retrieval Service, providing land and aeromedical transfers across Scotland. He graduated from Queen’s University, Belfast in 2002, before completing his anaesthetic training in Northern Ireland which also included a Paediatric Anaesthetic fellowship in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Dublin. Non-clinical roles include critical incident management, ANP mentoring and Simulation. He has an interest in team debrief and paediatric airway management. He is an average cyclist and terrible tennis player. 

Richard Burnett

Richard is a dual accredited Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.  He has been working in Pre-hospital Care and Retrieval Medicine for more than 15 years.  He has gained experience in Sydney, London, Nepal and East Africa.

Married to Katherine for 20 years and with 2 kids (Ruari and Tana) he is passionate about the outdoors, particularly kite-surfing, mountains and motorbikes.

Andrew Cadamy

Andrew Cadamy works as a consultant with the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service.  He has long held an interest in pre-hospital, retrieval and transfer medicine having worked as a doctor on cruise ships, and for the former West of Scotland Critical Care transfer team, known as the Shock Team. At his base hospital, the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, he is a consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthetics. He is the lead for clinical governance in critical care, and is a member of the ECMO team. He holds BSE accreditation in Adult Critical Care Echocardiography and is frequently seen either scanning, or gently berating novices for their ‘depth’ and ‘gain’ settings. He is the current lead examiner for the Diploma in Retrieval and Transfer Medicine, and is liaison EMRS consultant for Caithness General Hospital, Wick. Outside of work his interests include running, cycling, and currently also squash. He is also a Community Councillor and, in defiance of the rudimentary state of his DIY skills, he has a project to build (with the help of his two children) a small wood-fired pizza oven in his garden. 

Jimmi Ronaldson

James qualified as a Psychiatric Nurse in 2000.  He helped establish an Early Onset Psychosis Unit at Lambeth Hospital, London.  In 2002 with gentle persuasion from his wife he moved to Scotland where he completed his conversion course to be dual qualified.  The vast majority of his post-registration experience has been in emergency nursing. Prior to joining the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) in 2013 he was working as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner/Charge nurse in a busy inner city Hospital. James has completed a number of external courses in adult, paediatric and neonatal pre-hospital and in-hospital critical care. He has an MSc in Advancing Nursing Practice from Glasgow Caledonian University and a diploma in retrieval and transfer medicine from Edinburgh's Royal College of Surgeons. He has a growing interest in human factors and point of care ultrasound (POCUS). 

Neil Dignon MB ChB FRCEM FRCP DIMC DRTM

Neil is a graduate of Manchester University and his career has featured extensive experience in Expedition Medicine, a Paediatric Trauma secondment to South Africa and over a decade of aeromedical retrieval with EMRS. He is currently Major Incident Lead for North Glasgow. He was one of the original group which set up the DRTM exam and is also an examiner for DIMC/FIMC and CEM. 

Lt Col. Pete Davis MB ChB FACEM FRCEM MRCGP Dip IMC Dip Mtn Med Dip RTM

Pete Davis is a consultant in emergency medicine in the Defence Medical Services (Royal Army Medical Corps), based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital here in Glasgow. He has a background in prehospital and wilderness medicine, highlights of which include: retrieval work in New Zealand, a fellowship with HEMS London, and helping to pioneer both the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service in Scotland and the military forward aeromedical evacuation system that operated during the Afghanistan conflict ("MERT"). Successfully mixing both business and pleasure, he has climbed or skied throughout the world during many years of expeditions.

Dr Chris Lochrin MBChB MRCP FRCA

Chris is an ST6 dual accrediting in anaesthesia & intensive care medicine in Glasgow. Despite hanging around the base for years he has only recently been appointed to the senior clinical fellowship in aeromedical retrieval with EMRS. Chris is a pre-hospital enthusiast & when not on call works as a doctor in event medicine, motorsport & is an RMO for the British Horse Racing Authority.

Clinically he is a budding echo aficionado & has a penchant for major trauma care. He dabbles in major incident planning and is a keen instructor in  ETC, ALS & EPALS.

Dr Niall McMahon MB ChB MRCP FRCEM DIMC

Niall is a consultant in emergency and retrieval medicine working in the West of Scotland (RAH and EMRS). Hey has pre-hospital care interests including transfusion, code red and coordination (trauma desk). Hey has worked as part of pre-hospital medical team for events including T in the park and Formula 1 Grand Prix racing. His man sports medicine commitment is with Scottish Rugby. This includes elite level sport, working with Glasgow Warriors and support doctor for Scotland international teams. He teaches pitch side and resuscitation skills to doctors and physios involved in Scottish Rugby, Scottish football and the FA. He was part of the medical team for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and was iInvited to Gold Coast 2018 but couldn't get the time off work...
