MedSTAR
Based in Adelaide, MedSTAR is South Australia’s emergency medical retrieval service.
The team provide neonatal, paediatric and adult retrieval services for the state by helicopter, fixed wing aircraft and by land.
The service operates from a new, bespoke multi-million dollar retrieval base at Adelaide airport.
Royal Air Force 612 Squadron
The RAF ability to project advanced medical care around the world and throughout the evacuation pathway is internationally renowned, and has directly contributed to the improved survival of seriously injured and ill casualties.
The military operational trauma care pathway consists of an evacuation chain punctuated with episodes of damage control resuscitation and surgery. Effective in-transit care of the critically injured ensures they are delivered to the next medical facility physiologically optimised, with any required therapy being maintained or initiated during transport.
This capability is delivered through a resilient combination of fixed and rotary wing aircraft platforms, along with specialist personnel who are able to deliver high quality care in challenging situations. This performance is possible through optimal team composition, rigorous training and an intimate understanding of the aviation and transfer environment.
The outstanding contributionwhich RAF personnel have made to the development and delivery of critical care along the whole of the care pathway has delivered improved outcomes and led to unexpected survivors.
Emergency Retrieval and Transfer Service
Launched in 2015, the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) Cymru provides consultant-delivered pre-hospital critical care across Wales. It is a partnership between the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, Welsh Government and NHS Wales.
EMRTS Cymru brings teams of consultants and Critical Care Practitioners to an injured or critically ill patient via the Wales Air Ambulance Charity helicopters. We offer rapid access to innovative critical care at the scene, or we can retrieve patients from peripheral centres (inc. Emergency Departments, Minor Injury Units) to tertiary centres. The Service also supports neonatal services, time-critical paediatric cases, and offers a medical advisor role at major incidents or mass-casualty events 24/7.
When the aircraft are offline, EMRTS Cymru has access to a fleet of five state-of-the-art Audi Q7 emergency Rapid Response Vehicles (RRVs). Medical equipment has been designed to be interchangeable between the Charity’s helicopters and the RRVs.
