Testimonials:

“I had the pleasure of working with Stephen during a recent oil and gas industry initiative relating to the workplace competence assessment of Offshore Medics.  Always willing to share his time and knowledge, Stephen's experience in remote health care and his understanding of the challenges of medical care in remote environments was invaluable to the process and his input was instrumental in shaping the outcomes.”

Ewen Hay Standards Manager Opito Oil and Gas

“Stephens expert input was invaluable into the work we did in North Cumbria through the success regime. Through this work he gave very clear  helpful  advice around the transport options that were workable for us. In addition to this he helped us build a closer relationship with the air ambulance services which was a significant factor in the recruitment of some additional consultant staff.”

Consultancy case examples

New Zealand:

In 2018 Stephen was approached by the New Zealand Ministry of Health to be the international advisor for their helicopter air ambulance procurement project. The aim was to establish a nationwide helicopter emergency medical service with a fleet of modern aircraft and shared clinical standards. Stephen’s role included providing advice about clinical governance systems, clinical standards and medical crew configurations. These related to pre-hospital trauma care, critical care inter-hospital transfer and major incident responses.

Oil and gas offshore medic industry standards review

Stephen contributed to the working group set up by Opito and supported by Oil and Gas UK to review the standards for skills and training in remote offshore medics.

NHS Cumbria

Stephen was engaged as a consultant by NHS Improvement to review arrangements for critical care transfer in the region. This included a review of helicopter and road transfer systems. He provided recommendations for improvements to staff competencies and training, clinical governance systems and improved joint working with transport providers.

Glasgow Warriors Rugby Club

Core Cognition worked with the medical team at Glasgow Warriors to improve communication systems and skills during high pressure on field medical care.

Police Scotland

Stephen has worked with firearms units, public order teams and Police Scotland’s dive unit to review clinical governance systems and design bespoke training packages and equipment schedules for advanced first aid.

Energy transmission

The risks involved in remote site construction are considerable, especially in the electricity transmission sector. We were approached to assess the risks involved in the construction of a large remote electrical substation. We worked with the client to develop an effective medical emergency plan including land ambulance, air ambulance and search and rescue helicopter responses. We also developed emergency equipment packs for teams working in extremely remote locations.
